DIA DE LOS MUERTOS

My absolute favorite holiday of the year is Dia de los Muertos, that’s Day of the Dead for those who don’t speak Spanish. It’s the time to honor our dearly departed loved ones, go to a lot of festivities  in Arizona, and bring out the skulls.  The skulls are what I love best about Dia de los Muertos.  I’m a skull slut, if you really want to know.

My house is full of them. I collect day of the dead married couples in particular, and they are displayed prominently in my living room. My BFF neighbor, with whom I walk dogs every night, confided that she freaked out the first time she entered my house.  When she saw the skulls, she worried about letting her kids come over.

Really, it’s all quite harmless.  In fact, it’s a better way to deal with death than we do in Western culture.  It’s all about honoring our dead and laughing in the face of death.

Say hello to my dad, for whom I made a cajita back in 2009.  Note the wedding pic, him doing his “judge thing”, a teaspoon to honor his formidable cooking skills, an Argosy key chain from the casino he loved and some golf gear to honor his passion for the game.

It was a very cathartic experience to make this cajita in his honor and I now have an artistic tribute to the man who gave me life and so much more.  Viva el dia del los muertos!
