LEARNED IT ON THE BUS

I take a bus to work every day, after driving to a friend’s house and parking there. (Thank you, Trudi) The bus is free (thank you, City of Tempe) and it saves a bundle on parking at my job.

A gaggle of regulars, mainly women, who also work at the university ride it daily too.  I don’t know any of their names but we share smiles and pleasantries on the 10-minute ride to and from work.

Today after work, I boarded the bus with one of those ladies whom I affectionately refer to as the bus babes. We both grabbed empty seats on the right side.

“I hope we’re not facing the setting sun,” I said. “I was blinded yesterday.”

“We’re not, and you should sit on the right side of the bus no matter what.”

“Why is that?”

“We drive on the right side of the road in this country so if we have a head-on, the people on the left side will take the brunt of the collision.”

“Hmmm,” I said. “Never thought about it before.”

“And never stay in a floor higher than the 7th in a hotel,” she added.

“Because?”

“Because that’s as far as the fire truck ladder will reach. I used to be in the travel business so I learned all these tips to keep my clients safe.”

So now I’m sharing them with you. If I ride this bus long enough, I’ll be full of fun facts to know. Don’t worry, I’ll pass them along.
